きりこプロジェクト

「きりこ」とは、南三陸の神社が氏子たちのために作る半紙で作る神棚飾りのことです。
私たちは2010年に、この「きりこ」の様式を真似て、まちの人たちの宝物や思い出などを切り紙で表し
それぞれの軒先に飾るアートプロジェクトを行いました。
被災後、その絵柄を白いボードにして、それぞれの家が流失した跡地に、海へ向かって掲げました。
苦難を乗り越えようとがんばっておられるみなさんの姿を短い文で表し、それに添えました。
2013年夏、嵩上げ工事開始に伴い、南三陸さんさん商店街隣の南三陸ポータルセンター周辺にきりこボードを移設しました。

先人たちの代から営々と歴史が築かれてきた町並み。
その町で、人々は何代にもわたり仕事を営んできました。
出会いと別れ、笑いと涙の出来事が、無数に繰り広げられてきました。
その思い出が宿る町並みは、もうありません。
しかし、この町で生きてこられたみなさんの心の中に、その記憶は今も生きています。
その記憶は、町民が生きてきた証であり、誇りです。
そこで育まれた南三陸の精神こそ、この町を再建する原動力です。
大切なものは見えないものです。
見えないものを支えたい。
「きりこプロジェクト」を通して、南三陸町のみなさんとともに、
南三陸の誇りと心意気を伝えていきたいと思います。

“Kiriko” are paper cut-out decorations produced by the Shinto shrines in Minamisanriku for followers to decorate altars in their homes.

In 2010 we created an art project in which we adopted the language of kiriko and made paper cut-outs representing memories and other cherished things in the lives of the people of the town. We hung the kiriko above the entrances of the buildings with which they were associated. After the 2011 tsunami, these kiriko designs were transferred to white boards and were installed, facing the sea, on the site of each of the buildings that had been washed away. Beside each kiriko board is another cut-out board bearing a sentence about the efforts each person was making to overcome their troubles. In the summer of 2013, as the work of elevating land surfaces commenced around town, the boards were moved and reinstalled around the Minamisanriku Portal Center.

The streets and buildings of a town are the product of all who have come before us. They are the settings where people’s working lives have played out over the course of many generations. Over and over again, the town has witnessed the making of acquaintances and the parting of ways; it has witnessed laughter and tears. These memories, which are normally embedded in the fabric of a streetscape, no longer exist in the same way in Minamisanriku. However they do live on in the hearts of its people.

Such memories are evidence of the townspeople’s lives; they are the townspeople’s pride. It is this spirit of Minamisanriku, which was nurtured in such a way that is the driving force in rebuilding the town. The truly important things are not visible. We want to support that which cannot be seen. The Kiriko Project is a vehicle to communicate the happiness that was a part of this town and the joy that will live on in this place.

「きりこ」とは

宮城県塩竈市以北から三陸地方南部では、神社の神職が正月の神棚飾りのために縁起物を切り抜いた半紙「きりこ」や飾り幣束などを、暮れに氏子に配布する風習がある。
神社ごとに伝わる「きりこ」のデザインはそれぞれ異なり、いずれも美しい。漁業がさかんな南三陸町では、「きりこ」を神棚に一年を通して飾る家も多い。
